Japan Day and Japan Parade

The first Japan Day @ Central Park was held in 2007, to celebrate Japanese culture, the local Japanese American community, and to give thanks to New York. Featuring authentic Japanese food, cultural activities, and performances by both local groups and special guests from Japan, the event also hosted the Japan Run, a four mile qualifying event for the New York City Marathon. Japan Day @ Central Park was held every May until 2019, its 13th anniversary. Adapting to the coronavirus pandemic, the cancellation of the 2020 event was followed by the online-only Japan Day 2021 Thank You Project, before being reborn as the Japan Parade & Street Fair in 2022. The immense success of the parade and street fair prompted their return in 2023 and 2024 in the Upper West Side. The parade showcased units displaying many aspects of Japanese culture from taiko drums to dance troupes to martial arts teams, while the street fair had good food and fun activities.
